    Border Collie

Border Collies are highly energetic dogs that need to run and go for long walks every day. They were originally working dogs and were used to herd sheep along the border between Scotland and England. In many parts of the world, they are still used to move livestock and they are probably the best breed for this task.

A Border Collie should weigh between 30 to 45 pounds, according to the breed’s international standard. The height of this pooch can go from 18 to 22 inches and it is considered a medium-sized dog. They are very easy to train and do exceptionally well in obedience and agility competitions.

    Breed Characteristics

Border Collies are very smart dogs that develop a special bond with their owner. They are capable of understanding what their human companions want from them in just a split second. These dogs are not suitable for everyone, though. They need an owner who is an active person and can take them running at least twice a day.

They also need to be stimulated mentally on a daily basis by playing with interactive toys, puzzle games, or learning new tricks. Border Collies always need to have something to do to keep them occupied. If they have too much time to themselves they will usually get stressed and perform unwanted behaviors.

They often suffer from separation anxiety, so they cannot be left home alone while you go to work. Your chances of coming back home and not finding your furniture chewed up are pretty slim. Border Collies are also not a good choice if you live in an apartment. Having an outdoor space or a garden is really important for these pooches.

    Grooming

Border Collies are considered quite easy to maintain and usually don’t need to go to the groomer too often. They have a double-layer coat that protects them from the cold weather. This is made of a soft undercoat that feels similar to wool, and a topcoat made of long guard hairs.

In addition, there are two types of Border Collies; the ones with short hair all over, and the ones with longer hairs on the chest and the legs. The coat of these dogs can come in different color combinations, like black and white, red and white, gray and black, three different colors, and black.

Border Collies will shed twice a year, in spring and in autumn. They will lose all of their undercoat and put on a new lighter one for the summer, and a thicker one for the winter. In order to properly maintain a Border Collie’s coat, this needs to be brushed at least twice a week with a slicker brush. During the shedding seasons, the brushing routine will need to be daily.

    Health

Border Collies usually don’t have many health issues. This is even more so if these dogs are bred by licensed breeders that can provide clearances for the main genetic diseases. The most common health conditions for a Border Collie are:

    • Hip Dysplasia
    • Collie Eye Anomaly
    • Deafness
    • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
    • Epilepsy

    Corgi

Corgis have become a very popular dog breed in recent years. They are mostly famous for being Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite dogs. They were originally bred to herd cattle in Wales and are still used for this scope in many countries in the world.

Corgis are considered medium-sized dogs and, according to the international standard, they should weigh between 24 and 31 pounds (11 – 14 kg). The height of these pooches can go from 10 to 12 inches (25 – 30 cm). They are considered highly intelligent dogs.

    Breed Characteristics

Corgis are highly energetic dogs that don’t like to sit around too much. They are working dogs and despite their short legs, they enjoy running and engaging in various activities. Corgis are easy to train and like to please their owner. They have a tendency to bark especially if they don’t get enough exercise during the day. Two walks for at least 30 minutes every day is the minimum for these pooches.

There are two types of Corgis, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The Pembroke Corgi is slightly shorter than the Cardigan Corgi and has smaller ears. Both types of Corgis are friendly and can be perfect family dogs, but sometimes they can be just a tiny bit stubborn and aloof with strangers. This is why Corgi puppies should socialize as much as possible with other dogs and humans from a very young age.

    Grooming

Corgis have a double-layer coat and are considered heavy shedders. They will lose hairs all year round, but the shedding will be more intense in spring and in autumn. During these periods they will lose all of their undercoat and will then put on a new lighter one in summer and a thicker one in winter.

The undercoat of a Corgi is short and fluffy, while the topcoat is longer with straight hairs. In order to avoid filling your house with hairs, you should brush your Corgi at least twice a week during the non-shedding seasons, and daily when the shedding season has started.

A slicker brush with tips on the top of the bristles is the best choice to get the job done. A stainless steel comb will also be very helpful to remove the dead hairs from your Corgi’s coat. You won’t need to bathe your dog too often. Usually, once every couple of months will be more than enough. It is a good idea to take your dog for a bath just after the shedding period so that all of the remaining hairs can be removed.

    Health

Corgis are usually healthy dogs that have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. The most common conditions for these pooches are:

    • Hip Dysplasia
    • Von Willebrand’s Disease
    • Monorchidism
    • Progressive Retinal Atrophy
    • Degenerative Myelopathy
